RSVP: Golf Marathon Reunion 2024
Golfers Supporting Brookwood
On Monday, November 11, to celebrate 40 years of giving; golfers, Hall of Fame members, and friends are invited to a reunion and celebration luncheon at the Brookwood Café!
Forty years ago, soon after the formation of The Brookwood Community, the HOUSTON INVITATIONAL GOLF MARATHON was started and became a major annual fundraiser for Brookwood. Golfers found donors to sponsor each hole they played. On Marathon Day, golfers sprinted around the course to complete as many holes as they could to raise as much money as possible.
RAY DAUGBJERG, one of the early organizers, shared, “We had some celebrity players over the years, but mostly we had golfers committed to helping Brookwood. Mike Christman holds the record for playing 360 holes in one day! The event was scheduled in November, beginning at daybreak, and players were given hot baked potatoes to keep their hands warm! We were always so grateful for Brookwood’s SYLVIA PATTON who was the driving force behind the Marathon seeking out golf courses, new golfers, and volunteers.“
Over the years, the name changed to the Brookwood Golf Marathon to the Brookwood Golf Benefit to I BELIEVE IN BROOKWOOD, but all have the same objective of teams fundraising for Brookwood. Since 1985, more than $20M has been raised from this creative peer-to-peer fundraiser.
Daugbjerg said, “Without God’s touch the Brookwood Community would not be what
it is today, and the Houston Invitational Golf Marathon was His way of making funds
available.”
